The Gift That Keeps on Giving

For more than four decades KFC has been feeding South Africans from every corner of our country, creating fond memories with their great Original Recipe chicken. Consistently feeding those who can’t afford to feed themselves through initiatives like Add Hope.

Internationally, KFC has been affiliated with the Harvest programme since 1999, helping Yum! Global donate more than 72 million kilos of food to more than 3,000 nonprofit organisations worldwide. In recent years KFC South Africa stepped up and introduced the globally successful initiative.

This programme has two goals:

  1. Getting more KFC restaurants to donate their surplus chicken and give it to non-profit organisations, who do not have access to quality food.
  2. Reducing the volume of food dumped in landfills while combating climate change through the reduction of greenhouse emissions associated with food waste.

Food wastage is not just an African issue, but a global problem and the numbers are startling. According to a recent study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), currently 1.6 billion tons of food, worth 1.2 trillion dollars is thrown away or lost annually and could rise by almost a third by 2030, resulting in two billion tons binned.

KFC South Africa is aiming to change the face of the quick service restaurant industry by introducing a unique way to deal with their additional food in restaurants.

Through the partnership with Food Forward South Africa, participating restaurants distribute frozen surplus chicken to Food Forward who then give it to identified non-profit beneficiaries. Frozen surplus chicken is distributed using KFC’s transport partner Digistics to Food Forward SA depots on weekly pick up schedules where beneficiaries collect the food and prepare nutrient-rich meals for people in need. In addition to the surplus frozen chicken in restaurants, KFC repurposes additional food & ingredients (kidney beans, tortillas, relish & rice) as part of the donation to complete their meals.

To date since 2015, KFC South Africa has donated approximately 326 058 kilograms of food, that has been converted into an excess of one million meals.

“In 2015 we amended our business process to accommodate the surplus food programme, which was key to ensuring the success of the programme whilst maintaining our rigorous internal food safety procedures in restaurants” says Thabisa Mkhwanazi, Public Affairs Director at KFC Africa.

KFC has become such a vital part of the nation. Throughout the years they’ve managed to cement themselves into the hearts of consumers and build a monster brand in the process. But more than the profits and the Original Recipe success, they’ve always stuck to their values of community and chicken for all. They’ve gone above and beyond the call of duty by creating this sensational tool to combat hunger and environmental issues. Their commitment to the cause is unapparelled and unwavering and we hope that they may long continue their great work.
